Washington, D.C. has been my home for the past four years and was my home during four years in the ’90s for college, so I have lots of memories here. I also have a list of favorite places, of course, and some of the most important involve sweets.
Right before my family and I moved to D.C. four years ago, I saw a segment on The Today Show about a new cupcake shop in Georgetown that had lines forming outside their door and snaking down the street. I’ve long loved a cupcake, and so, when I was with our realtor looking at homes, I asked if we could stop for one. Georgetown Cupcake was all I had dreamed it would be and more. Their cupcakes are ridiculously good (their Red Velvet and Strawberry varieties are my personal favorites), with perfectly sweet and moist cakes, and the most divine frosting you can imagine.
The only thing sweeter than their cupcakes is the two sisters who own the shop, Sophie and Katherine. They are literally among the nicest people I’ve ever met. Sophie and Katherine are so sweet that their success (they now own five Georgetown Cupcake stores, including stores in Boston, New York, and LA, and still have crazily long lines snaking outside their expanded D.C. shop) makes me feel like all is right with the world. You can also order their cupcakes for delivery throughout the country.
If you’re near one of their shops, try their cupcakes! You might faint from the deliciousness, but you will thank me nonetheless. And if you run into Sophie and Katherine, give them a hug for me. They’re the sweetest!!
Thank you, Sophie and Katherine, for helping to make my time in D.C. so sweet! (And if you are looking for a new location, I nominate San Francisco!!)
