Got It? (A.K.A. Lessons From Laetitia)

These new photos from Tommy Ton taken during the Men’s and Couture Fashion Weeks caught my attention.  You may recall I discussed my intrigue with the woman pictured a while back.  Laetitia Paul captivates Fashion Week photographers regularly, and it’s not hard to see why.

And it’s not her outfits, per se, that make her so enchanting.  While cool, her clothing and accessories could easily be worn by someone else with no particularly special effect.  Instead, it’s something about her bearing, the intensity of her expressions, just something remarkable that simply can’t be put into words.

I have a hunch that Ms. Paul is not trying to be cool at all.  She doesn’t look, like so many Fashion Week attendees, like she’s trying too hard, piling all her accessories on at once or painstakingly mismatching all the prints in her closet.  Rather, she seems like she’s just naturally got “it,” that ineffable thing that draws attention.

Upon reflection, however, I think there are a few things that we can learn from Laetitia:

1.  Be who you are.  Clearly she’s following her own drummer and not trying to pile on all the “it things” of the moment.  Her spirit comes through and has little (if anything) to do with her clothes.

2.  Go with what works for you.  Some themes can be picked up in her ensembles– she wears mostly neutrals, with bits of color thrown in (usually in accessories).  She dresses fairly simply, almost in a unisex way, without overtly feminine details (this may be part of why I’m so inspired by her, because I look silly with any sort of ruffle, bow, etc. attached to my person).

3.  Have fun with it. Leatitia’s lovely smile in the last photo show that she’s not taking it all too seriously.  Neither should you (or me, for that matter).  Have fun.  Enjoy dressing, living, etc.  Now, go on.  Get out there.
