I’m not into gambling, but I would have laid money down against what you’re seeing here ever happening. I was absolutely certain, until twelve hours ago, that I would never, ever wear red lipstick.
And then Valentine’s Day came; I read an article on Into The Gloss (a fabulous beauty site) that made me think, “Why not try?;” I brazenly bought my first red lipstick; and the rest is in evidence above.
You see, I have a few things mitigating against red lipstick– one, I have a big mouth, including large lips that I try to mask in one of ten thousand shades of nude lip gloss; two, I have super-pale skin with pink undertones, which makes anything red stand out all the more. So I have hidden from red lipstick, avoided that entire section in Sephora, etc. When I heard Gwyneth Paltrow say that “Beauty, to me, is about feeling comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick,” I figured feeling comfortable in my own skin was going to be my only option.
But yesterday I went for it. And I felt like a hip badass for it (a feeling I’m not at all accustomed to). I highly recommend it. I started with YSL’s Volupte Shine in 12, a orangey, pinky, red that goes on like Chapstick. It has a somewhat transparent look to it, so that you can ease into red, if need be.
But I have to say that Gwyneth is onto something. And this red lipstick has opened up a whole new world in front of me. If something I swore I’d never do made me feel this fabulous, there’s really no telling what I’ll try next. Any suggestions?
And, by the way, if I can wear red lipstick, officially anyone can! Try it out– it just might change your life!
Have a great weekend!!

The red looks great on you Ali and I really like that particular shade. Cool that you stepped outside your comfort zone and went for it!

Red lipstick looks great on you! You’re inspiring me to try it, although I have a feeling my results will not be the same!!
