The other night, I went to the ballet (!!). This made me feel so much more worldly and cultured than my usual night behind my computer with Stephen Colbert playing in the background. It was a truly breathtaking evening that is still whirling in the back of my mind.
That night I wore the outfit above. During the course of the evening I finally realized why capes are chicer than coats (or my best guess at that riddle, anyway). Something about their voluminous shape helps capes really become your outfit if you want them to. That’s why, in addition to wearing this cape over black dress pants and an interesting crepe top, I’ve also worn it with sneakers, skinny cords, and a denim shirt. Because the cape becomes the main story, and what’s sticking out beneath becomes almost inconsequential.
So, I’m going to continue to wear the heck out of this cape. Because I do seriously feel chic in it (even when my hair is unwashed in a ponytail, and I’m recycling items of my wardrobe from earlier in the week beneath it). Because chic that comes easily is my favorite kind (and frankly the only kind of chic I’m going to obtain on the average Wednesday).
Have a happy weekend!
