For years, I dreamed of owning an Alaia dress. Year after year, I saw how beautiful they looked on women– real women (including Michelle Obama, not just teeny tiny models)– and imagined a day when an Alaia dress would find its way into my closet.
When the day I’d dreamed of finally arrived last year, my years of wishing seemed perfectly justified. Because an Alaia dress does something to its wearer.
First, it makes you look spectacular. Perfectly pulled together. And I swear it almost helps pull you together, because the knit of his dresses feels both weighty and like it helps keep everything in place. It makes you stand up straighter and just a bit more confidently. It makes you feel like you might just be unstoppable.
Even when you’re wearing a black dress in a sea of black dresses, you feel like you are standing on your own.
So all that waiting seemed totally worth it. And now when I have an event to go to where I want to be polished and presentable, it’s the first one that comes to mind. Which makes it seem nearly priceless.
