Purple Rain

Purple Rain by Dallas Clayton

I didn’t realize how many of Prince’s song’s I really loved until today.  He was on the scene long before I was a music appreciator, and though I knew his music, I’d never been to one of his concerts or even, really, thought much about it.  I’m embarrassed to admit, in fact, that my favorite memory of one of Prince’s songs may have involved this scene from the movie Pretty Woman.

But, tonight, I played a bunch of his greatest hits for my kids, and I realized how many were really awesome songs.  And I also came to appreciate what a hauntingly beautiful song Purple Rain is.

I’ve seen several beautiful versions today, but this is by far my favorite.  It gave me chills.  Then it made me cry.  And then it made me watch it again.  Jennifer Hudson and the rest of the cast of Broadway’s The Color Purple took it to a whole other level.  I also loved this jam session by a bunch of legends, including Prince’s stunning guitar solo, during his induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Prince will live on in his music.  But I wish I’d appreciated him more when he was still with us.

So sad I missed the chance to see him live when I was a freshman in college. Awesome talent – he brought joy with his music. RIP
